HD6 - Study of Telemedicine Pursuant to HJR 455 of 1995


Executive Summary:

House Joint Resolution (HJR) 455 of the 1995Session directed the Joint Commission on Health Care, in consultation with the Council on Information Management and the Department of Information Technology, to evaluate the use of telemedicine to provide better, more accessible health care to the Citizens of the Commonwealth. Specifically, HJR 455 requested an evaluation of: (i) the means of implementing telemedicine, (ii) the success rate of telemedicine; (iii) potential cost savings from telemedicine, (iv) the potential of telemedicine to improve health care; and (v) the impediments to successful utilization of telemedicine. The Joint Commission was directed to complete its work in time to submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 1996 Session of the General Assembly.
