SD9 - Access to Buildings and Services by People with Disabilities in Virginia
Executive Summary: The 1997 General Assembly adopted Senate Joint Resolution 353 which directed the Disability Commission, with technical assistance from the Department of Rehabilitative Services, the Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Department of Rights for Virginians with Disabilities, to: (1) Review the requirements of current federal and state laws relative to the rights of persons with disabilities; (2) Determine the extent to which state and local government buildings and facilities are in compliance with such laws; (3) Determine ways to improve and enhance access to public accommodations and services; (4) Consider other related issues as may be necessary to address the needs of disabled persons in accessing public buildings, accommodations, and services; and (5) Offer such recommendations as the Commission may deem necessary and appropriate. |
