As of March 31, 2008, the market value of the VRS pension fund was $55.7 billion. The return for the total fund for the one-year period ending March 31, 2008, was 1.5 percent. The fund’s performance exceeded established benchmarks for the one-, three-, five-, and ten-year periods ending March 31, 2008. However, the fund did not earn the current assumed actuarial rate of return, 7.5 percent, for the one- and ten-year periods ending March 31, 2008.
