HD3 - Review of Year-round Schools in Virginia

    Executive Summary:
    House Joint Resolution 646 of the 2011 Session directed the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) to study the efficacy of year-round schools. To date, JLARC staff have conducted preliminary reviews of the research literature and met with personnel from the Department of Education and representatives of the Virginia Education Association. JLARC staff will research a variety of aspects of year-round schools, including

    • evaluating the experiences of schools and school divisions in Virginia that have implemented year-round schools;

    • analyzing the impacts, if any, of year-round schools on costs and academic achievement; and

    • identifying factors to be considered if year-round schools were to be implemented on a more widespread basis in Virginia.

    JLARC staff will complete the review of year-round schools in Virginia by November 2012. A report of the Commission's findings will be submitted to the General Assembly and the Governor, and an executive summary and the report will be submitted to DLAS, no later than December 31, 2012.
