RD167 - 2024 Annual Report on the Insurance Fraud Program

Executive Summary:

Last year, criminals attempted to steal millions of dollars from hardworking people throughout Virginia. But they did not do it by breaking into homes or robbing banks – they did it by committing insurance fraud.

When people file false insurance claims, they are stealing not only from their insurance companies, but from their friends and neighbors as well. Fraudulent insurance claims ultimately result in higher premium payments for everybody, costing the average Virginia family $1,000 each year.

This is why the Virginia State Police’s Insurance Fraud Program works so hard to stamp out insurance fraud. Since 1999, our special agents and analysts have teamed up with members of the insurance industry, commonwealth attorneys, and law enforcement partners to put an end to these crimes.

And our efforts are working.

In 2024, we helped initiate 335 insurance fraud investigations, successfully returning over $78,000 in restitution.

But we did not stop there. To improve our program’s effectiveness, we performed extensive security audits on our StampOutFraud.com website, streamlined data collection from all of our field offices, and worked to spread the word to the public through a radio interview and advertising campaign. Citizens with knowledge of suspected insurance fraud are encouraged to submit a confidential tip to StampOutFraud.com or (877) 62-FRAUD. Tips that lead to arrests earn rewards of up to $25,000.

Together, we can continue to stamp out fraud in Virginia!

Sincerely,

/s/ Lieutenant Colonel Matthew D. Hanley
