2023 Facts At A Glance

• The total number of incidents reported was 363,437. (Page 10)

• The total number of offenses reported was 405,672 and the month of May had the greatest numbers of offenses reported with 36,510. (Page 9)

• In the number of reported incidents, there were 423,636 Group A Crimes reported by the contributing agencies. (Page 8 & 10)

• Of the 20,824 violent crimes reported, 49.4% occurred in the residence/home. (Page 55)

• There were 5,647 victims of the 5,349 forcible sex offenses reported by the contributing agencies. (Page 19)

• The total theft of property was $634,863,885. Stolen automotive and financial property accounted for a property loss of $242,782,770 and $240,697,664 respectively. (Page 46)

• Firearms represented 40.6% of all known weapons used in aggravated assaults. Of all victims of aggravated assault, 56.3% had some type of injury. (Page 16)

• There were 3,243 assaults on officers reported in Virginia. Of those who reported injury data, over one-quarter (27.6%) involved some type of injury to the officer. (Page 77)

• Of the 325 hate crimes reported, 94.2% of these were assault offenses (aggravated assault, simple assault, intimidation) or vandalism/damage of property offenses. (Page 61)

• Drug arrests increased (18.0 %) with the largest increase in the Under 18, followed by the 65 and over age group (54.9% and 44.3%). Arrestees may have been arrested with more than one drug. (Pages 48-49 & Page 71)
