As directed by Senate Joint Resolution No. 25 (SJ 25), the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has completed a study of the groundwater supply in the Commonwealth east of Interstate 95 (I-95), an area that generally coincides with the Virginia Coastal Plain (VCP). The accompanying report represents, to date, the most comprehensive effort to address the complex question of how much groundwater supply is available in this important region of the Commonwealth. Key figures are presented in this Executive Summary, and many additional illustrations and data tables appear in the full report. The report begins by summarizing the current understanding of groundwater resources in the VCP aquifer system, derived primarily from the past three decades of cooperative scientific research and publication by DEQ and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
